MAORI WEDDINGS AT TE KUMI.
TeKumi wore a gay and festive appearance on New Year's Day, when a double wedding was celebrated in true Maori style at the settlement. The contracting parties were Mr J. Taylor and Miss A. Sainsbury, of Te Kuiti, and Ruruanga Mahuki (Te Kumi) and Miss Sarah (Otaki). Preparations had been undertaken on an elaborate scale to do honour to th,e occasion, and fully foqr hundred Natives were assembled at the village When the eventful day arrived. New Year's Day proved fine, and a large crowd of Europeans proceeded from Te Kuiti to witness the cere* mony. The accommodation of the village was taxed to the utmost, and the numerous tent that were erected spread out over the flat, and gave it the appearance of a military encampment. The brides were beautifully dressed in the regulation European costume, and were supported by bridesmaids. The ceremony was conducted by the Rev Haimona Hapimana, and after the service those assembled sat down to a sumptuous repast, cooked in true Maori fashion.
