TE KUITI PUBLIC SCHOOL.
— The annual breaking up of Te Kuiti school for the Christmas holidays took place on Thursday last, when the occasion was celebrated bj r a garden party in the school grounds. The school committee members and their wives had been busily engaged collecting subscriptions towards the prize fund, and the respectable total of £lB 5s was reached. The prizes were presented to*Mr J. Ormsby, Chairman of the Committee, who congratulated the headmafter, Mr Power, upon the excellent state in which he had placed the school, both as regards scholarship and tone. He also referred to the fact that the assistant teacher, Miss Grattan, was leaving for the purpose of spending a year in the Teachers' Training College, and trusted the experience would prove beneficial alike to teachers and scholars. The teachers were labouring under certain disadvantages, which he trusted would shortly be removed. The attendance at the school was hardly enough to warrant the appointment of another teacher, but the average was increasing every month, and very little more would be required to enable them to claim the services of an additional teacher. This would be a good thing for the school. In referring to the gathering Mr Ormsby said that great credit was due to the ladies committee for their efforts in connection with the function, Mesr dames Mordaunt and Seymour being particularly deserving of mention. The following children were presented with prizes : —Standard 6, jst prize, Emma Ormsby ; 2nd, N. McNaught; standard 5, Ist prize, S. Power; 2nd, K. Kerr ; standard 4, Ist prize, N. Hackett; 2nd, R.
