MATIERE.

On Saturday, October 24th, Mr Samuels had the misfortune to have his house, at Waipu, destroyed by fire. It appears that some embers were left in the fireplace and it is supposed the fire originated from these. Mr Samuels is a heavy loser, as also is Mr E. Mason, who lost all his clothing and personal effects. Surprise parties have become fashionable here, both Mr and Mrs Doar and Mr and Mrs Hyde having been visited of late. At the latter house it was a surprise party indeed. With the advent of better weather, no doubt these functions will become more numerous. Messrs H. and G. Blank have erected a butcher's shop here, and their enterprise no doubt will receive its due reward. The sale yards are still the talk, and a dream ot the near future. It is now said that they will be erected in time for the Farmers' Auctioneering Co. to hold their sale in December. I hae ma doots! The weather—Oh, dear! Oh, dear ! —what can I say about it ? Well, as the coster says: "There ain't a word." It has not been so bad during this last week and everyone, from the dairy cow upwards, is anticipating better, but some will always have memories of August and September, 1907- . . -*** The Ohura Settlers' Association

propose holding a banquet shortly. " Here's Luck ! " The "la grippe " still holds sway here, and every one you meet now-a-davs has either got it, or is getting it. It is in a more severe form than of yore, and has almost completely expelled that dread disease of theOhura, " Papatonitis." The new boarding-house is still in the same place, no thanks to the last flood, and is nearing completion at the same rate as the Ongarue-Strat-ford railway.
