OTOROHANGA.

A Hindoo, named Win Singh, who was residing at Otorohanga and travelling the King Country as a doctor, was arrested on a warrant by the Otorohanga Police on Oct. 18th, and appeared before the Otorohanga Court the following day and charged with theft of £lB lOs from Nepi Tipa, and with obtaining £2 from Ngawaero, at Te Kopua, by means of a false pretence, and also by means of a false pretence of obtaining 80s from Te Waiata. On the application of the Police, the accused was remanded to T-- Awamutu, where he appeared before Mr Northcroft,S.M.,on Oct. 22nd. When charged at Te Awamutu, Win pleaded not guilty. After hearing the evidence, His Worship convicted accused and sentenced him to 12 months' imprisonment for theft: also two months for obtaining 30s by false presences, and three months for obtaining £2 by false pretences. The accused was further charged by Constable Fraser with supplying liquor to a Maori woman and was convicted and fined £lO and £4 costs. On a charge of bringing liquor into Otorohanga, without being properly labelled, he was convicted and fined £25 and £4 costs. . He was also charged by Const. Fraser with being a " tohunga," and pleaded not guilty. After the evidence for the prosecution was tak en, the defendant gave evidence on his own behalf. He stated that he could cure any disease including cancer and consumption ; he also stated that he could " makutu " the Maoris and cure Maoris that had " makutu." He was fined for this offence £lO, and £4. costs.
