KAWHIA.

Things are very quiet here owing to the continued wet weather; it is still wet and stormy, and no appearance of fine weather. ihe s.s. Waitangi has been here since Thursday evening. She has a full cargo for Waitara, and although she could get out of here, she could not get into Waitara, the bar having been very shallow there lately. Several blocks of land have been leased from the Natives lately and others are being enquired for, but the Natives have an exaggerated idea of the value of their land and several would-be settlers have given up the idea of the leasing them. The inclement weather has caused the death of a number of sheep and lambs, but sheep are being brought into the district every few weeks and the export of wool should be trebble what it was last season. A number of people, both in Kawhia and the country, have been laid up with influenza (mostly mild cases), but a few have been seriously ill with it. The s.s. Rothsay, after being detained in Aotea for nearly a fortnight by bad weather, returned last week, and is now loaded up with a full cargo for Marakopa and Harihari, and is waiting for the sea to go down to leave. Mr E. D'Arcy Hamilton was married at Te Mata last Wednesday to Miss Vera Gibbison, of Kauroa, and returned, home with his bride on Thursday.
