MATIERE.

It is not every day that residents of " Back-blocks " have the privilege of attending a performance such as the one given in the Hall, by the Matierc Musical and Dramatic Society, on the the I/th inst. The first and second parts consisted of an "All Black Show," Mr W. Lc Cocq actinj;" as Intercohitor. Songs were rendered as follows : " Starlight " and " Ise goingback to Dixie," G. Mossman ; " All Men should work " and " Every 'Race has its Flag but the Coon," 11. O'Brien ; " Close Your Drcamv Eyes " and "The Old Owl," L. R. Hill; " Rose of Killarney " and " Kiss me Good Night," F. Towers; " Down at the Old Bush " and another, A. Hyde. During the interval items were rendered as follows: Overture, Miss Brown ; song, Mr A. H. Hyde ; recitation, Mr Bcchino. Mrs Hyde was accompanist at the piano. Several good " local hits " were made during the evening. The performance concluded with a very laughable comedy entitled, " The Doctor's Patients." The cast of characters were: Dr Truelove (W. Le Cocq), his wife — Dolly Truelove (Mrs Hyde), Maria Tibbie (Miss Leonora Chipwood), Jeremiah Pipkin (G. Mossman), Doolcy (A. O'Brien). The parts were played well all round, that of Miss Leonora Chipwood being really good. Mr L. R. Hill acted as stage manager. The Society arc deserving of great praise for the trouble thai they went to to arrange the sLage and the manner in which they carried everything out, and there is no doubt they will have a much larger audience when they give their next performance on the night of the opening' of the new sale yards, when it is to be hoped that the roads will be much drier, and outlying settlers will have a better opportunity to attend. After the performance the hall was cleared for a dance, which lasted about a couple of hours. The boiler fqr the Niho Niho factory has at last arrived at the 17-mile peg, after being four weeks on the road from Ongarue. One more week and its travelling ought then to have ceased. Needless to say the bullock drivers have had an unenviable task. Messrs Hill and Doar have received the plans for Mr Ryan's billiard room and shop, and expect to start on the erection within a week.
