DISTRICT PARS.

As the Chronicle yearly term ends next month, subscripers are notified that all outstanding subscriptions should be paid as soon as possible. A narrow escape from a serious accident occurred on the Awakino road on the last trip of Mr Hattaway's mail coach to Piopio. Just after reaching the top of the hill from Te Kuiti one of the leaders began to play up, and the whole team becoming frightened made a bolt down the hill. The driver maitained his presence of mind and succeeded in getting control of the te.am by the time the" bottom of the hill was reached. How the coach kept Hie road in rounding the sharp turns on the descent is is little short of miraculous. Two passengers were en board, and fortunately stuck to their seats, thus escaping with nothing more serious than a shock to the nerves. The annual meeting of the Otorohanga Sports and Axemen's Carnival has been fixed for Wednesday December 18th, and judging by the interest already evinced in the project a record meeting should ensue. It is pleasing to learn that the success of past gatherings has been such as to enable the committee to increase the prize list to close on £IOO. Posters are already being got ready, and will be issued very shortly. The opening of new businesses in a town is always an indication of solid progress, and several additions have been made to the various branches of trade at Te Kuiti of late. The most recent business to start is that of Mr J. Racket, tailor and breeches maker, who has just opened a shop on Mr Hardy's premises in Sheridan-street. Mr Hacket, who has had experience in the trade both as a cutter and tailor, in England and the colonies, is sure to get a measure of support from both town and country. The Waikato Show dates have been fixed for November Bth and 9th and the schedules have already been got out, detailing the various classes and prizes attaching thereto. The prospects of success for this year's show are excellent, the season having been an exceptionally favourable one, and the interest already manifested by those concerned promises well for a record function. It is always gratifying to know that absent friends and those who have sojourned among us, upon departing to fresh fields, are able to reserve a warm corner in their hearts for those with whom they have lived and worked. Te Kuiti has not suffered the loss of many of its old residents of recent years, but the departure of Mr Stanton and family about a year ago left a blank in the social circle and was viewed with regret by all. Mr Stantion, however, still maintains a connection with the scene of hjs recent labours, and has now donated to the choir of the new Church of England and very useful present in the shape of tvro dozen psalters and a music book for the organ. The gift will doubtless be highly appreciated as an evidence of regard from one who was connected with the early work of the Church at Te Kuiti. The Anglican Church concert, which is fixed for Wednesday evening next, promises to be one of the most successful entertainments } r et held at Te Kuiti. An exceptionally attractive programme has been arranged, the well-known excellent local talent being supplemented by a strong contingent of Hamilton performers. Fine weather is the one remaining adjunct necessary to assure the complete success of the function.
