OHURA VALLEY.

A fire occurred on Sunday week at Mr Hyde's dwelling, Matiere. There was a great amount of damage done in consequence of the fire getting under the roof, and the attempts at suppression resulted disastrously. The cause of the conflagration is supposed to have been a defective chimney. Fortunately, the fire was discovered by Miss Harrison, who roused the neighbours before it had too great a hold.

The Bachelors Ball at Mangaroa, on June 28th, was highly successful. There was a record attendance, and all thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Messrs Dense Bros, supplied the music.

The new boarding-house for Mr C. J. Ryan, is well under weigh, and should prove a great convenience. It is to be finished by the end of August, and it is rumoured that a billiard room is to be erected alongside.

The school attendance has not been very good during the last mouth or two. Doubtless the roads are bad, but every effort should be made by parents to keep the attendance up to the mark.

There is a great deal of building to be undertaken in this district, and work for carpenters will be plentiful.
