KAEAEA.

A social and dance was held in the; school room on Thursday evening, the 20th iiast., when Mr Gulson acted as M.C. in his usual capable manner, and Kaeaea fully maintained its former reputation for success in social functions. On this occasion, the social was tendered to Miss McMillan, who has held the position of schoolmistress here fcr some time. The evening was fine, and there was a large muster of residents. Dancing was kept going till daylight, and an enjoyable time was spent. During the evening songs were rendered bj" Mrs C. Riddle, Messrs Bennett, Hickman, Williamson, and Saunders, while Messrs A/Gulson and R. Riddle contributed recitations. Mr Collett's step dance was and item of special interest. Before the company broke up, Mr Gulson made a tew remarks, expressing the gen r d regret with' which Miss McMillan's departure is viewed by the c immunity. Mr Hickman, in moving a vote of thanks to the M.C., touchedjon that gentleman's immediate temporary absence from this district, and on behalf of the company, wished Mr Gulson a good time, and a safe and quick return. Mr Gulson left on Friday en route for New South Wales, where he will remain for some months.

The continuous frosty weather is rendering grass somewhat scarce in in this district, but stock is still looking fresh.
