MARAKOPA.
Active steps are being taken to establish the private telephone line in this district, and a meeting was held on Monday night for the purpose of furthering the project. There were present: Messrs Rose, Toomath, Stanley, Haylock, Hartmann, Smith, and Shaw. It was decided to form an association to be called the Marakopa Association, and register it under the " Association and Friendly Societies' Act." Quotations for wire, insulators, and other requisites are being obtained, and matters should soon be on a firm footing to go ahead. Messrs Rose, Toomath, Haylock, and Smith were appointed to flag out the line between Te Anga and Kiritehere, and report on the timber available for posts. Messrs Stanley, Hartmann, and Shaw are to do similar work between Te Anga and Kinohaku. A further meeting is to be held on June 22nd.
Some of the shipwrecked people from the ill-fated Kia Ora, arrived at Marakopa the day after the wreck, and were hospitably received. The news of the disaster created a profound sensation locally, and the deepest sympathy is felt for all concerned. Widespread expressions of regret are heard at the untimely end of Captain Blacklock, who was .respected by all who came in contact with him.
