MATIERE.
0 A meeting in connection with the proposed dairy factory was held on Tuesday, May 7th. Mr Hine, solicitor, was in attendance, and the memorandum of agreement, and draft articles of association, were discussed. There were about thirty settlers present, and keen interest was taken in the proposals. The company is _to designated the Ohura Co-operative Dairy Factory Company, and is to have a nominal capital oi £SOOO, consisting of s°oo shares of £l each. The proposal includes the establishing of a factory at Niho Niho, with creameries at Mangapapa and Mangaroa. About 750 shares were subscribed at the meeting, and promises were obtained totalling well over 1000 shares. With the starting of the dairying industry, on a sound footing, there is every reason to look forward to increased prosperity in the district. Up to the present the majority of settlers have been unable to get much return for their labour, and many of them have found it a severe tax to go on paying out for improvements, without the opportunity of a substantial return. Most of the sections are eminently suitable for dairying, and are held in moderate areas. The larger holders are in a position to do well with cattle and sheep, but the majority will welcome dairying, and the monthly cheque, in milking season, will be a great assistance towards the general prosperity of the community. It has been decided to hold a concert and dance in the Town Hall, Matiere, on the 28th inst. A strong and capable committee, with Mr Hyde (chairman) and Mr B. O'Brien (secretary), will be responsible for the programme. The chief attraction at the concert will be a performance by the Mangaroa Christy Minstrels. The new store at Matiere is_ rapidly nearing completion, land it is rumoured that Mr Hyde will celebrate the opening by a dance in the Town Hall. The store is a fine commodious building, in which good provision has been made for post-office and telephone accommodation, and Mr Hyde should do well in his new venture. The sawmill, which has been idle for a week owing to an accident to the engine cylinder, started work again on Wednesday.
