OHURA VALLEY.

There has not been as much rain as usual for this time of year, and the roads are still good good lor carting, on. All who intend carting_ during the winter have obtained permits from the Minister to cart foodsLurts omy, subject to the by-law regulating wheel trafile during winter months. In view of the opening of the butter factory at Niho Niho, the intending Suppliers, and all settlers interested, are now signing a petition to have the Waikaka road, between the two new bridges at Waikaka and Niho Niho, widened the full dray width. This will be an expensive but necessary undertaking if the factoiy is to bs 3. success. Mr J. Kelly, the new road inspector, who is taking charge of the roads in this part of the district, arrived at Mangaroa on Thursday to take up his duties, Mr Early having Ibeen transferred to Te Kuiti. Mr Kelly is a young, able man, with long experience of road works in bush districts, and will be fully occupied in keeping pace with advancing settlement and the requirements of settlers. The Ohura Valley will soon be m the midst of a whirl of social excitement. It is proposed to hold a grand up-to-date Bachelors' ball, in the new Town Hall at Mangaroa, within a few weeks. The Mangapapa settlers have also decided to celebrate Empire day by holding a social and dance in the schoothouse on the evening of the 24th, and if it is as successful as the last one, it will be worth going to. Most of the settlers are now fully recovered from the effects of the first Ohura sale, and the subsequent social functions. . Two large blocks of Native land have been subdivided at Mangaroa, and it is expected that a large amount of bushfelling will be done this winter, which, with the roadworks in the district, will make work very plentiful for some time. Dr Rowlands has arrived m this district, and taken up his residence at Mangaroa.
