MATIERE.
Owing to no official communication having been received from the Education Eepartment, relative to the annual meeting of householders, no meeting was held at Matiere. At the Mangapapa schoolhouse, the meeting of householders was well attended. Ten nominations were received, and the following committee was elected for the ensuing year : Messrs Carter (Chairman), Cribb (Secretary), Peacock, De Malmanche, Fanchelle, O'Brien, and Geisler. Mr W. A. Carter, of Mangapapa Valley, has been appointed a Justice of the Peace. A sports committee meeting was held on Saturday evening last, in connection with the protest against Collerton. After considerable discussion the meeting was postponed for a fortnight, in order to receive a reply from the Secretary of Athletic Association. . Mr Cashel has closed his store from the end of April, and the buildings and stock have been purchased by MiHyde, who has started to build a large store. In the meantime Hr Hyde will use the old buildings as temporary premises. The opening of the NihoNiho bridge took place on April 26th, and was attended by a large number of settlers. Mr G. Loveday performed the opening ceremony, and the ribbon was cut by Mrs Weinberg, the first lady resident on that side of the river. A dinner was provided for the occasion, the table being erected the full length of the bridge. Games and races for the children Avere indulged in, and the married women's race provided great excitement. The race resulted in a dead heat between Mrs Bell and Mrs McKinder, and in the run off Mrs Bell proved the winner. The negotiations in connection with the starting of a dairy factory have given rise to a rather peculiar situation. Messrs MacEwan and Co. agreed to start, providing 700 cows were guaranteed, but, as that number was not forthcoming, negotiations were opened with Messrs Griffiths and Co., who agreed to open with the guarantee provided by the settlers. In the meatime MacEwan and Co. also decided to start, and matters have become complicated.
