ARIA.

The approach of winter has made things in general rather quiet, though the roadworks are being pushed ahead, and should be well advanced before winter sets in in earnest. The road from the punt to Mokauiti is now open for traffic, a circumstance which will be 'appreciated by Kaeaeae residents, as the road shortens the distance between that place and Te Kuiti by about two miles. The Waitewhenua road is being continued, and is now completed for a distance of over six miles from the punt. The Parahika road contracts have also been let and should be in hand immediately. The Mokau - Ohura road is now nearly completed. A distance of about thirtj'- chains has still to be done before the connection is made, but this should be put in hand shortly and the continuous road will be in full use next summer. This will be a great convenience all round, as the number of people travelling through is surprising, to say nothing of the rapidly increasing settlement. It is stated that we are to get a boardinghouse .in the township at last. One of the great drawbacks up till the present has been the difficulty of obtaining timber. However, I learn that Mr Kearns is to make a start at cutting the timber right away. He has procured a small oil engine and a circular saw, and the material should be got ready during the winter. In the early summer the building should be completed.
