MANGAROA.
A Jockey Club meeting was held at Messrs Williams and Bruce's store on Friday, March Ist. Amongst other business, tenders were received for booths at the forthcoming races, and W. T. Bell was the successful tenderer. It was also decided not to deduct the five per cent, off the winnings as advertised in the programme. This will be gratifying to owners. The members of the Domain Board held their first meeting on Friday, February 2-3 rd. .It was decided to call tenders for the grazing of that part of the domain now in grass..,.A% so to ask the Waitomo County Coun- : cil for a subsidy of £SO, to be spent on improvements on the domain. A recreation ground is much needed in our township, and we hope that in the near future our domain will be in order. Mr Hope's boarding house has changed hands,. Mr Craven being the new proprietor. We have in our district at present, Dr Rowlands, from Wellington, who is having a look round prior to accepting, or otherwise, our Medical Committee's offer. We are all hoping that his reply will be favourable, as we are far from medical aid at present.
The contractor, Mr Craven, is pushing on with the construction of the Town Hall, and will have it in readiness for the race ball on March lßth. ' The metalling at the township is steadily going on, and we hope this winter to have a few yards of terra firma in the midst of our usual winter's slough. As regards the rest of the road, the Rosds Department are missing a splendid season. If a few surface men were put on at this time of the year, the work done would be of service in winter, but nothing is being done. Any work done during the winter months is practically useless, but still we see each year the same thing. Nothing done in summer ; in winter half-a-dozen men throwing mud from the sides to the middle of the road, and making the matters even worse than before. We have several suitable streams here for trout, but as yet nothing has been done to bring them in. Is the Acclimatisation Sociely the bcdy who ought to see to this ?
