ARIA.

The sports, which are to be held here on Friday, February Bth, promise to be a great success. Good entries are expected for the various events, and those in charge of the management are now busy making the necessary arrangements. A dance will be held in the evening.

The greatest grievance in our district is having to cross the Mokau by punt, and ample evidence of the necessity of having the river bridged has been shown during the recent floods. Several settlers had rather a trying experience in attempting to cross one day last week, and we are certain that a serious accident will be the result if it is not attended to. Travellers and others have been delayed several hours, and have had to leave their horses on the other side, and then walk on to Piopio and hire horses, so as to reach Te Kuiti with any degree of comfort. All this means expense to the settlers, to say nothing of the loss of time. On Monday last there was to have been a mob of about 200 cattle brought on to the Te Kuiti stcck sale, but they could not be got across. The settlers are all very anxious to have this river bridged, and a petition is now doing the rounds for signatures, requesting Parliament that a sum of money be granted to accomplish this most necessary work.
