MATIERE.
A fire occurred at Matiere early on Saturday morning the I2th inst., when the Boarding House owned by MrT. O'Brien was totally destroyed. Mr O'Brien and one of his sens were the only occupants of the plsce at the time of fire, and had a narrow escape, having to get out through the window. The insurance is supposed to be £2OO on the house and contents.
At the meeting held to form an Athletic and Sports Club, it was decided to hold the first meeting about the middle of March. The chief event will be the Handicap Chop of 20 sovs. Mr A. O'Brien was appointed Secretary. There was a sharp earthquake here at about 4.30 am, on the 14th inst. The weather has been very sultry since New Year, the heat being very oppressive, and thunderstorms beingfrequent. Heavy rain fell all clay on Sunday the 13th inst., with the result that the Ohura river was in high flood on the following day. Advantage was taken of this to float the timber for the Toku-rimu bridge down the river.
A start has been made with the Mangapapa school, the Education Board having decided to erect it by day-ladour. The timber is being snpplied from the Government mill at Kakahi.
