TAUMARUNUI.

This district escaped any serious damage during the flood, though a considerable strip of land on the river bank, near the recreation ground, was carried away. The washing away of the river banks is in some cases a serious matter, and it is to be hoped steps will be taken to cope with the encroachment.

An accident occurred on Monday to a workman, named W. Bradley, on the Kaitieke road. The man was working in shooting ground and, owing to a premature explosion of blasting powder, sustained severe injuries about the chest and arms. He was attended by Dr Cairns and sent on to the Hamilton Hospital by Tuesday's train.

The Hon. Hall-Jones arrived at Taumarunui on Monday evening from Raurimu, having come overland on a tour of inspection of the Main Trunk line. The Minister expressed himself in optimistic terms with reference to the completion of the railway by the end of the year. A deputation from the Town Council waited on the Minister at Meredith House in reference to various matters of local importance, and consideration of the subjects was promised. The Ministerial party left for Wellington on Tuesday morning, via tha Wanganui river.
