MATIERE.
A fire occurred in the Mangapapa Valley on the 24th of- December, when the residence of Mr R. Dunne was burned to the ground, the whole of the contents, with the exception of a sewing machine, being destroyed. Mrs Dunne had been busy preparing for Christmas, and it is supposed that a spark from the chimney caught in the shingle roof. A relief fund, in aid of the sufferers, has been started in the district, and is being well responded to. The settlers in the Mangapapa Valley had a picnic on Boxing Day, a number of visitors being present from Mangaroa and Matiere. The day was spent in games and amusements for the children, a very choice selection of toys being distributed as prizes. A dance was held in the evening at the residence of Mr Box. The settlers of the Whenukura Valley had a picnic on New Year's Day. Several settlers took advantage _ of the spell of dry leather, before Christmas, to burn their bush, and good burns are reported. An effort is being made to have an athletic sports meeting at Matiere at an early date.
