KAWHIA.

There is a probability of our having a branch of the Bank of Australasia opened here shortly ; it will be a great boon to the settlers. The Rev. Mitchell has left here for Te Kuiti, and the Rev. Davidson, who takes his place, will arrive in a few days. Mr J. K. Newton has been appointed School Commissioner in place of the Rev. Mitchell (resigned). Kawhia has been full of visitors lately, some for a holiday, but most of them for the sports and races on the 4th. Heavy rain in the afternoon put a stop to the proceedings, and several events were postponed until Saturday morning. A very enjoyable dance was held in the evening. The' Northern Co.'s tender is expected here next week. The Marakopa Flaxmill Co. are pushing on the erection of their plant, and expect to start work very shortly. Mr Metcalf, representing an Auckland syndicate, has gone dpwn to Marakopa in connection with the proposed erection of a third flaxmill in that district. Mr G. H. McKenzie of Oparau, was married to Miss Morgan, of the same place, in Auckland last week. Wool, flax and fungus are still coming in for shipment, and our shed and and wharf are much too small for the rapidly increasing trade of the place.

A mumber of settlers have_gone_ in for separators, and butter is being shipped away by every steamer.
