MATIERE.

On Tuesday evening November 27th, a social was tendered to Mr and Mrs Beresford by the residents of Matiere, to bid farewell to them before leaving here to take up their residence at Mangaroa. The hall was verv tastefully decorated for the occasion, there being a good attendance, including several visitors from a distance. A good evening's programme was provided, including dances, songs, recitations, etc. Mrs Hyde kindly lent here piano for the occasion, and provided the music, being releived by Miss Bond, of Te Kuiti, and Messrs Carter and Flett. Messrs H. O'Brien and Stubbington acted as M.C's. The following are some of the musical items :—Song, " Peg away," and as an encore " Old Grenadiers," Mr Beresford ; duet, " Very Suspicious," Mr and Mrs Hyde; recitation, " Old Mother Hubbard," Mr Mossman; song, " Sometimes, Dear Heart," Mrs Hyde; song, " The Honeysuckle and the Bee," Mr Towers; song, "A thousand leagues under the Sea," iMr Beresford. Light refreshments were provided. Mr and Mrs Beresford were the recipients of a presentation in the form of a silver cruet, inscribed " Presented to Mr and Mrs Beresford by their Matiere friends." Mr T. de Vere Hunt made the presentation in a very complimentary speech, which was briefly replied to by Mr Beresford. Mr Beresford has been managing Messrs Bruce and Williams' store during his stay in Matiere, and has also filled several public positions, including the secretaryship of the school and hall committees.

A report was current, through the district that "Tommy" O'Donnell, who was sent to the Hamilton Hospital, was dead, but his friends will be glad to learn that he has returned safely to the district. Mr O'Donnell speaks very highly of the treatment he received during the sixteen weeks that he was an inmate of the institution. The usual monthly meeting of the Matiere School Committee was held on Saturday last. The secretary (Mr Beresford), sent in his resignation, and it was resolved that the resignation be received with regret. The school picnic was fixed for the 2lst inst. The schoolmaster reporled the attendance as follows :— Average for the month, 23.8 ; for the last two weeks, 26.75 ; Number on the roll, 18 boys, 14 girls ; total 32. Mr Wisken was elected secretary and treasurer.
