THE WAR IN CHINA.
WALDERSEE ORDERS REMOVAL OF FLAGS. BRITISH REFUSE TO OBEY. RUSSIANS TEAR THE JACK DOWN. BRITISH DEMAND REHOISTING. OR ACT OF WAR DECLARED. RUSSIA APOLOGISES AND REHOISTS BRITISH FLAG. LONDON. Nov 9 Daily Express states Waidersee, Commander in Chief of Allied forces, ordered removal of all flags from Shan Hai Kwan station. British commander there decided to await order* of his own chief, Gaselee, before complying. A Russian lieutenant, with 10 men, assaulted sick sentry and tore down the flag. A British subaltern, at head of small force, demanded that it should be reheisted. Russians outnumbered British and covered officers’ party with their rifles and lorbade them to stir. The guard communicated with Major General Read, who sent 200 men demanding that apology be made and the Union Jack be rehoisted, intimating that refusal to do so would be regarded as an act of war. The Russian General apologised and rehoisted the flag.
