SYDNEY, May 30 Executive, after deliberate consideration, declined to allow Montgomery and Williams’ appeal to Privy Council against sentence of death passed upon them. There is great excitement in the city tonight over tbe decision. Mass meeting, attended by fully 15,000 people, was held, when resolutions were carried condemning the action of the Govt. Deputation appointed to wait on the Premier. Detachment of troops prevented crowd from assembling in front of Parliament House.
Later The Premier declined to hear representatives of the deputation.
May 31 Montgomery and Williams were executed this morning. Owing to bungle on part of hangman, Williams, being the lighter man of the two, was given a shorter rope, and just before the bolt was drawn be fainted, and falling on one side he caught the rope under his arm and did not get tbe benefit even of the short drop. He was practically strangled, but he was unconscious. Montgomery met his death with courage. Death was instantaneous.
