THE CHURCHES.

Anglican. Christmas Day services at St Ueters, Town, and James, KoiS Jai, were bright and enjoyable. Although there were evidences both in the somewhat diminished congregations, and also in the voices of tflehgyman and choir, of influenza being in our midst. The decorations were quite up to their usual standard, indeed we think beyond, and the effect of the Toi Toi and Native Flax in the Kowhai Church was very pleasing and artistic. In St Peter’s the Nikau Palms, the beautiful crosses of white flowers, relieved with some composed of geraniums and other flowers, rendered the interior of the Church very ornate. At both early and midday celebrations there were the average number of communicants present. Mrs Flower presided at the organ and did her utmost, in a very able manner, to assist a weak choir, this by reason of the complaint afflicting so many. Those members of St Peters Young Women’s Guild who have weeklysupplied flowers for the Church for over a year deserve special mention for their attention to what is very pleasing to both clergyman and congregation.

CATHOLIC. As usual the decorations in St Michaels, Mt Fyffe Road, on Christmas Day, were very beautiful, reflecting much credit on Mr Win Smith (Ludstone). Miss Smith (Sea View) and Miss Margaret O'Donnell. Services took place at 6 a.in., 8 a.m., 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., all being very well attended, the Rev Father Keegan not concluding his arduous day’s duty until 10 p.m. He preached two sermons, besides conducting four masses. The Missa Cantata at 10 p.m. was very beautiful and impressive. Upon Mrs B. Mackie and Miss Smith (Ludstone) devolved the duties of organist, and admirably did they discharge them. Included in the music of the day Was the Kyrie from Winter’s Mass, the Gloria from Webb in G., Webb’s Sanctus in C., Webb’s Agnus Dei in G., and the “ Adestes Fideies ” with a cornel obligato by Mr E. Smith, this being given at both the penultimate service and Vespers, a Grand March concluding the Benediction. This bitter was abreviated somewhat, owing to the Revd Father having to attend the funeral of a Native member of his flock.
