THE Kaikoura Star. TUESDAY, JANUARY 5, 1891.

The ’Frisco mail arrived at Auckland on Friday

Yq’he London meat market shows prospects of rising. Picton crews won all the chief rowing events at the Marlborough Regatta there on New Year’s Day.

Mr Overend, local agent of the Company, kindly sends us a copy of the Victoria Insurance Company's useful office calendar. We would remind the electors of Kaikoura that Mr Buick, M.U.R., invites them to meet him in the Templar Hall tomorrow evening.

Mr T. L. Buick, M.H.R., accompanied by Mrs Buick, arrived hereon Friday evening, and are the guests of Mr and Mrs Walter Gibson, Kaiwhare.

Mr Lloyd, dentist, arrives here today from Blenheim, by coach. He only purposes staying a fortnight, during which time he inay be consulted at Mrs T. Cooke's, opposite to Mr Hopkins’ store. A rumor was in circulation here oh Saturday evening to the effect that Mr Idle, proprietor of the Hanmer Plains Hotel, was dead. Information was yesterday received by Mr Close, from Waiau, stating that the report is false. The drainage system in Torquay Street proves utterly defective. Last evening there was a small lake in front of the shop of Mt Borland, chemist, and generally in that neighborhood the utility of the work done some time ago proved quite abortive. The heavy weather has interrupted road communication. The Southern coach was unable to come up the Mason this morning. and the mails have been sent back to Christchurch to try and catch the Wakatu. In all probability the Hapuka will stick up the North coach tonight.

Mr G. 11. Clifford was married on Tuesday last, at the Hawarden Catholic chapel, to Miss Detinas, who was given away by Mr J D. Lance. Mr and Mrs Clifford arrived here cn Thursday, enroute for Flax bourne, and were the guests of Mr and Mrs A. S. Collins, at Mount Fyffe. On Saturday afternoon Mr C. Bruners icsideuce was destroyed by fire, really nothing being saved. The fire originated through a spark falling on the dry shingle roof of the house, Mr Brunel being, unfortunately, away from home at the time. He, or any man, could easily have put the fire out when it was first discovered. Mr Brunel h;is been exceedingly unfortunate, and now that he has lost everything, after previous losses, his case is a very hard one. The premises were insured for £l5O with the New Zealand Insurance Company in the name of the mortgagee.

MiG. Taylor has been laid up for some daydl past, having hurt his back through when getting off a dray, on to a large boulder. The Government advise that tenders will shortly be called for works on the Kaikoura-Clarence road, for Which £2OO was voted last session, but that the County Council will have to make repairs at the Ohau. Mr Collins, Coilnty Chai mail, and Mr Smith, Clerk, have replied on the matter.

In consequence of the indisposition of the Rev Mr Ensor, the Anglican Church sendees on Sunday were taken, morning andevening. by Mr C.C. Howard,of Picton, Who is at present paying Kaikoura a shdrt visit. Mr Howard takes the children's service next Sunday afternoon, and will probably assist at-, if he does not conduct the others. With regard to the disputed pdint about the New Year Handicap here, Mr L. A. Uttfe Secretary of the Canterbury Amateur Acetic Association, wires us, in reply to a query sent him, that there is no necessity to compete in each event. This appears to us quite conclusive, though, of course, the question Will be referred by the Secretary of the Sports to the NZ. Referee. Mr Cuff’s answer confirms the opinion held by the Handicappers for the Sports. Much needed rain began to fall early yesterday morning, but ceased about 8 o’clock until evening, when a heavy downpour occurred. Rain continued all night, with but slight intermission, and also during today. Though Wanted badly by many, if the rain continues long it will do harm to a number of settles, besides interfering with shearing. M r Collins informs us that his rain-guage, at Mt Fyffe, registered a fall of 3in 35.100ths between 4 p.m. yesterday and 9.30 a in. today. The death of Mr Haswell between six an<A seven o’clock on Friday evening caused a shock to many here when the news of his decease became known. He had been in indifferent health for some time past, and during Christmas week he was known to be very bad, but no one anticipated that his end was so near. He took to his bed on the day that his daughter-in-law, the late Mrs R. B. Haswell. was buried, and has gradually declined since then. He sank very rapidly between 5 30 and the hour of his death. The attendance at the funeral on Sunday was very considerable, showing that deceased was held in respect by a very large number of residents here.
