WATER FOR PAEROA

WAITAWHETA RIVER SCHEME RESERVING THE WATER RIGHTS A decision to make application to reserve the water rights of the Waitawheta river for a water supply for Paeroa was reached at the April meeting of the Paeroa Borough Council. Mr B. Gwilliam Snr., who brought the matter up urged that the council take steps to secure the water rights over the river from the old Crown dam. He pointed out that at the present under the Minig Act the water could be reserved by anybody. The town clerk, Mr A. A. Jenkinson, was instructed to arrange with the borough solicitor to take the necessary action to reserve the necessary rights. The Mayor, Mr Edwin Edwards, said he had been considering the possibility of utilising the river to provide additional electricity as well as a water supply for Paeroa. The authorities at present were considering the construction of small plants to assist Arapuni. Mr Gwilliam explained that for electricity a volume of water was needed while for the reticulation of Paeroa pressure was needed. The two could not be worked together, he explained.
