NO LABOUR
DRAINS NEED CLEANING EFFECT ON PRODUCTION BOARD’S APPEAL TO MINISTERS The difficulty the Thames Valley Drainage Board is experiencing in carrying out its proper functions owing to the scarcity of manpower is being made known by letter to the Prime Minister, Minister of Labour, Minister of National and the Manpower Officer (Hamilton), in the hope that something can be done to improve matters. In maintaining some 300 miles of drainage outlets annually and con-
trolling 60 miles of river, farmlands must inevitably suffer and production decline if these outlets are not kept clean and open for land drainage. The authorities are being advised that the bulk of the labour offering is Maori labour, and that many of these men are very irregular in attendance and are-constantly changing employment. While it was realised that there is a shortage of labour generally, the board is exploring every avenue in order that production will not suffer.
