INTOXICATED CYCLIST MAORI BEFORE COURT LICENCE ALSO CANCELLED Charged with being intoxicated in charge of a motor cycle, Hiwi Paul, a Maori of Kerepeehi, was fined £l5 and his licence was cancelled for 12 months by Mr W. H. Freeman, -S.M., in the Paeroa Court on Monday. Paul was also charged with not having a warrant of fitness for his motor cycle and' for not having an effective silencer on the machine. On the last two charges Paul was convicted and discharged. He pleaded guilty to all three charges. Constable J. L. Brown stated that at about 5 p.m. on March 18 a traffic inspector had noticed -Paul riding his motor cycle in Paeroa towards Ngatea with another Maori on the carrier. The conduct of the rider was such that it attracted the attention of the inspector who followed the cycle. At the railway crossing the cycle swung out so wide that it nearly went up the railway track. The inspector had to follow the motor cycle for another halfi-mile before he could stop Paul although the inspector had his siren going all the time. Paul had no warrant of fitness for the cycle and no silencer on it. A fine as stated above was imposed with doctor’s fee £1 Is Od.
