PAEROA MEETING
CHAMBER OF COMMERCE TOWN & DISTRICT AFFAIRS HOSPITAL LOAN- OPPOSED A meeting of the Paeroa Chamber of Commerce was held in the Paeroa Rotary Club ’Rooms on Thursday night, the president, Mr D. Leach, presiding over the following members, Messrs J. Brockie, G. Stewart, P. H. Leigh, R. A. Leacock, E. Kahn, R. L. Darley, C. Kenny, W. H. Taylor, D. G. McMillan, E. Thomas, W. H. Cheale and the secretary, Mr J. Bartlett. The chairman reported that the membership had grown as a result of a canvass to somewhere in the vicinity of 60. Considerable discussion ensued regarding the construction of a road to the East Coast, the advantage of the Wires' Track from Whangamata to Hikutaia being emphasised. The question was left in the hands of a committee to deal with. The question of the £50,000 rebuilding loan which the Thames Hospital Board proposes to raise was dis-
cussed and it was decided to place the chamber’s objections before the Local Government Loans Board. With reference to the construction of a direct route from Paeroa to Patetonga the chairman reported that a conference of Paetonga settlers, members of the Paeroa Borough Council and members 'of the chamber would be held at Kerepeehi on Monday next. All members who possibly could, were urged to attend the conference. The secretary urged the need for a definite town planning scheme to improve the look of the town. There were, he pointed out, many derelict buildings and vacant sections growing blackberry. Steps should be taken to clean these up and l make it attractive.
