FISH CONSERVATION
COROMANDEt PENINSULA REQUEST TO THE MINISTER The question of seine netting around the coast of the Coromandel Peninsula was again discussed at the March meeting of the Coromandel County Council when a letter from Mr E. W. Gilliver, Inspector of Fisheries, was received. After discussion it was proposed- by the chairman, Mr C. C. Rae, seconded by Cr. E. M. Minifie, “that the Minister of Marine be approached asking for amendments to be made to the Sea Fisheries Regulations to make it an offence to use or attempt to use any drag net or purse set net or hand seine net whether operated by hand or power of any kind in the enclosed waters of Mercury Bay, Whangapoua harbour, Colville bay, Coromandel harbour, Te Kouma harbour and Manaia.” This amendment is required for the purpose of conservation of the fish supplies, to make it possible that the Maoris and local residents will foe able to obtain fish for their own requirements.
