TONE OBJECTED TO

LETTER TO THE COUNCIL COMMENT BY THE MAYOR THURSDAY NIGHT’S MEETING Strong objection to its tone was taken by members of the Paeroa Borough Council on Thursday night when a letter from the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., Paeroa, was read. Mr R. Buckrell, agent for the company, wrote to the council as under: “ We have been advised that some adverse comments have been made on the subject of the take of grass on Primrose Hill with particular reference to the Canadian and Scotch thistle and- also to the quality of the grass seed generally. “As the suppliers of the seed we naturally take some exception to any remarks made on the subject of the quality of our seeds more particularly if • such remarks are made by people obviously hopelessly incompetent to judge and for the benefit of members of your council we would advise that the following seed only was sown by Mr Davies: (1) Government certified Hawkes Bay ryegrass. (2) Government Certified 1 white clover. (3) Government certified cowgrass. (4) Government certified turnip seed. (5) Subterranean clover guaranteed by Australian Government. “Your council is perhaps not aware that all certified seed carries a certificate of purity and germination test with it, so it will be apparent that the thistle seed was not supplied by us. As a matter of fact Mr Davies states quite, definitely that both varieties of thistle were there before the hill was ploughed the first time. “ We thought it advisable to bring the above to the attention of your council in order that councillors may be in a 'better position to judge and in conclusion we would advise that Mr Davies, himself a practical farmer, is highly satisfied with the results so far.” Councillors were somewhat indignant at the tone of the letter* which the Mayor, Mr Edwards, stated was bordering on being* impertinent. Some discussion ensued as to what action the council should take and whether the letter should be received. Finally it was decided to merely receive the letter.
