PLAINS CHEESE

WAITAKARURU FACTORY REVIEW BY CONVENER NEW COMMITTEE ELECTED Mr A. McClean presided over a wellattended meeting of cheese suppliers at the annual meeting of the New Zealand Dairy Co-operative Company’s Waitakaruru cheese factory, held recently. Mr Cubis. cheese superintendent, N.Z. Dairy Co-op., Mr Davey, assistant manager to the company, and Mr W. E. Hale, director for the Hauraki Plains Ward, were also present. Mr McClean congratulated the suppliers on the achievements of the past season and on the record pay-out (2(}.37d per lb.) which had been received. The amount of cheese manufactoured was lower than the previous year owing to the fact that a number of suppliers had reverted to butter supply in compliance with the Government’s order. Decreased Output

The exceptionally dry season and the supply of milk to Auckland were also contributing factors which caused a decreased cheese output. The loss of butterfat owing to the dry season, especially by suppliers from Mangatarata, would to some extent be compensated for by the higher pay-out for the season’s supply. Milk was supplied to Auckland from March until the latter part of July, the profit from this contract materially increasing the pay-out and proving the capability of the Plains as one of the best sources of milk supply during a dry summer.

Mr McClean expressed the thanks of the suppliers to the manager, Mr Dick, and his staff, for the efficient working of the factory. Mr Cubis gave details regarding the work of the factory, and presented the balance-sheet for the year. Mr Hale also spoke, giving a short resume of the manufacture of both butter and cheese throughout the Dominion during the past season and on the outlook- for dairying in the future. Convenor Resigns

After 15 years’ service as convenor of the factory, Mr McClean tendered his resignation, which was accepted with regret. Several speakers referred to the devoted service Mr McClean had rendered since the opening of the factory 15 years ago, and placed on record their deep appreciation of his efforts on behalf of the suppliers. At a subsequent election, Mr N. W. Hedges was appointed convenor, and the following suppliers were elected to the committee: Messrs C. W. Parfitt, F. Wallis, A. E. Laing, C. Thomasen, J. Gandley, T. Hibbel and D. Armstrong. An enjoyable supper was served by Mesdames McClean and Dick, a vote of thanks for their work being carried by acclamation.
