THE KAUAERANGA ROAD
(To the Editor.)
Sir,—Mr Thorn’s letter to the Hon." R. Semple, containing the statement of Mr Gallop, the secretary of the Thames Chamber of Commerce in support of the Kauaeranga road, contains only one side of the question and I feel that the other side should be
advertised as much as possible. The four points made by Mr ’Gallop in f avour of the Kauaeranga road can be combatted by points in favour of' the Neavesville route. Take point I.—The construction required on the Neavesville route -will be considerably less than 10 miles, and will cost one-seventh that of the Kauaeranga. ' Points 2 and 3 apply equally to both routes. As to point 4, viz.:— “The road (Kauaeranga) will give by far, the easiest access to the settlers to a centre where hospital and marketing facilities are available.” It would be well for Mr Gallop and Mr Thorn to study the following facts:—The distance from Hikuai to Thames via each route is practically the same, with the advantage to the Neavesville road that the last seven miles from Puriri to Thames, is a bitumen highway. From Puriri one has the choice of several stock markets whereas the Kauaeranga provides access to one only. Several Hikuai settlers will always require the Neavesville road to be kept open as a stock track, which will stiW ; be a county expense* —I am, etc.,. ROBT. L. WILSON, Neavesville Rd., Puriri, " 21:8:43;" ;; ' fWlli
