LAND SALES BILL
(To the Editor.)
Sir, —In the concluding stages of the debate in the House of Representatives on the Servicemen’s Settlement and
Land Sales Bill, the Leader of the Opposition, Mr S. G. Holland, appealed to the Government to postpone the measure in deference to the demand of large sections of the public. Mr Holland suggested that a Bill more in accordance with the wishes of the Returned Services’ Association should be prepared. It might have been expected that this reasonable suggestion would. be adopted and the views of ex-service-men taken into consideration, more especially as the R.S.A. has declared itself in favour of freehold tenure for all soldier settlers who desire it. However, the Government forced the Bill through Parliament and provided one more example of the dictatorial methods and the contempt for public opinion whieh invariably characterise a Socialist administration. —I am, etc., C.W.B. Hamilton, August 23, 1943.
