SCOUT RALLY
PAEROA TROOP ATTENDS COMPETITIONS AT THAMES PROGRAMME LAST WEEK-END Boy Scouts and Girl Guides from the Thames Coast, Paeroa and Turua visited Thames on Saturday to participate in the big rally held on the vacant section near the Plunket Rooms in Queen street, Thames. Keen competitions, including a message relay, knot relay, morse and semaphore signalling, staff-lashing, fiire-lighting, first-aid, well-scaling, camp gadgets, and an obstacle race, were held, the Thames Scouts and Guides scoring an all-round win. The total points were: Thames Scouts, 68; Paeroa Scouts, 59; Sea Scouts, 30; Thames Guides, 43; Turua and Lone Guides, 24; Paeroa Guides, 23A parade of Scouts and Guides, 105 strong, marched from the Druids’ Hall, before the rally on Saturday morning. Social Evening A social evening was held on Saturday night in the Druids’ Hall, there being a large rally of Scouts and Guides. During the evening the local Scoutmaster, Mr S. T. G. and expressed the hope that they would have an enjoyable evening’s entertainment.
Items were given by the following; —Scout D. Kerby, recitation; Scout J. Motion, recitation; Guide J. Nightingale, solo; Scout L. Middleton, cornet solo; Guide M. Burford, recitation; Scout K. Strange, solo; Guide R. Motion, poi dance; Guide C. McKenzie, recitation; Guides M. McAuley and M. Buchanan, minstrel item; Guide-Captain Mrs Paynter, recitation; 'Sea Scoutmaster L, Griffin and Scout G. Fisher, humour; Paeroa Scouts, haka; Sea Scouts G. Griffin and. W. Ramsay, duet; Guide M. McAuley and Scout K. McAuley, pianoforte duet; Mr E. Whitehead, conjuring. Scouts M. Smith and B. Brokenshire gave an exhibition of burlesque boxing, Scout C. Brokenshire acting as referee. A chorus with action was sung by the Thames Girl Guides.
At the conclusion of the social, Sea Scoutmaster L. Griffin thanked the ladies of the Social Committee for the capable management of the supper arrangements. He also thanked the accompanist, Mrs L. Rowe. The Paeroa Scoutmaster, Mr C. N. O’Neill, replied on behalf of the visiting Scouts and Guides, thanking the Thames people concerned for their hospitality. On Sunday afternoon, a Scout and Guides’ Own (church service) was conducted by Mr W. Moore in the Grahamstown Park.
