WORK IN DRAINS
SOME NEED WEEDING DAMAGE DONE BY STOCK FOREMAN’S REPORT TO BOARD Work carried out in drains on the Hauraki Plains was reported by the foreman, Mr W. Johnson, in the following report to Thursday’s meeting of the Hauraki United Drainage Board:— The outlet of the Spencer-Madgwick drain has now been opened up at the floodgate and the Spencer drain outlet likewise. The outlets were in a very bad state as nothing had been done to them for a few years. The drain had to have the willows cut also an old wooden floodgate which had been nut in years ago had to be removed. The Kerepeehi-Kopuarahi roadside drain east side from Kneebone’s culvert to Alwinger’s drain has been cleaned on wages. Slips have been removed from the south side of Te Kauri No. 1. The widening and deepening of Sutton’s drain has now been completed. I inspected the Kopuarahi stopbank roadside drain and passed it for payment. , The Kopuarahi stopbank, north side of the ferry has been repaired. In front of Mr Mouldry’s residence the pinetrees have been cut back so as to clear the telegraph wires and thrown on to the batter of the drain. These I have had to have removed. A slip has been removed from the Taipari outlet drain east side of Ko-puarahi-Kerepeehi road. The township drains have been cleaned on wages.
“A small portion of 'Torr’s outlet drain from Oparia road had to be weeded so as to lower the water. Oparia roadside drain from Torr’s outlet to Hill-Elvin 'boundary has been cleaned, on wages. “The Piako roadside drain nortn side from floodgate to the Hill corner bend in the drain has now been weeded. The Campbell drain just down from Campbell’s pine trees to Miller-Newsham boundary has been cleaned. Orongo Ferry roadside drain from Le Noel’ik bridge to Green-Hales’ boundary has been weeded on wages. “A few chains of the Kopuarahi roadside drain south side from factory outlet eastward has also been weeded on wages.
The Louch-McDuff drain is still being damaged by pigs and cattle. Both the batters and bottom are in a very bad state and it will cost about £2O to put the drain in order again.
The School drain outlet from the back of the floodgate to the top side of the Hauraki road has now been completed. Te Kauri No. 2 drain below Scott-Urquhart drain to within a couple of chains of Mr Fox’s pines has been weeded on wages. “Te Kauri No. 1 drain has been started' to be weeded but could not continue on as there was too much water. It will have to stand over until the tide suits. Piako roadside drain south side from pipes in drain down below Opario road to Mr Hicks’ boundary bend in road ik now being weeded “The timber for sheathing the pipes at the back of Campbell’s' farm has now been delivered. The fluming at the 'back of Tower’s outlet gate has been repaired.” The clerk was instructed to write to the owner of the stock .' damaging the Louch-McDuff drain and advise him that repairs would be carried out by the board and charged to him, the estimated cost being £2O. A fence also would require to be repaired to prevent the stock continuing to damage the drain. The board would pay half the cost of repairing the fence.
