PRICE OF POSTS

QUESTION IN THE HOUSE TIMBER FROM ROTORUA MR SUTHERLAND’S REQUEST Concern at the price which the public had to pay for creosoted posts in the Rotorua area was expressed by Mr A. S. Sutheland, M.P. for Hauraki, in the House of Representatives recently. He said most of the posts were obtained from forest thinnings but they were selling at Hamilton, a distributing centre, at £22 10s a hundred first grade, £l9 10s second grade and £l6 10s third grade. The Hon. Mr Barclay. The price, is £l7 10s first grade and £l2 10s second grade at Rotorua station. Mr Sutherland said that a letter written by a company which handled many of the posts showed that the prices he had mentioned were being charged. As the timber was so easily procurable he thought the Government should reduce the price by 40 per cent., and he would like the Minister to consider a reduction, especially as the farmers had been asked for greater production, and: many of them, particularly the pig industry, wanted the posts for extra runs. Dairy farmers and sheepfarmers also were finding it difficult to secure fencing posts at a reasonable price.
