NOT SAFE
WHARF AT WAITAKARURU
BOAT OWNERS’ OPINION
LIABILITY FOR LOSS DENIED
That the wharf at Waitakaruru was definitely unsafe for working cargo was reported to Wednesday’s meeting of the Hauraki Plains County Council by Mr A. H. McClean, convener for the Waitakaruru Cheese Factory who asked that steps be taken to make the structure secure.
Mr McClean wrote enclosing a copy of a letter received from Messrs Hail and Co., agents for the M.V. “Wairuru” as under:—
“Captain R. W. Paterson of the M.V. ‘Wairuru’ has to us that the wharf is in exceedingly bad repair and in his opinion not safe foi cargo operations. “On this account we wish you to clearly understand that if any cheese is lost through the collapse of the wharf we must deny liability.” The '''chairman, Mr C. W. Parfitt, said the work would be put in hand as soon as material was available.
