FARMERS CONCERNED
GOVERNMENT LAND SALES BILL MEETING HELD IN PAEROA Opposition to the present Servicemen’s Settlement and Land Sales Bill at present before the House of Representatives was voiced at Tuesday’s meeting of the Northern Thames Sub-Provincial Executive of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union held in Paeroa and it was decided to telegraph to the Minister. Mr H. C. Jackson (Paeroa), said that the meting should object to the Government taking the right to interfere with the freehold rights of farmers. He objected to the principle. Mr H. H. Hicks (Turua), agreed with Mr Jackson. He agreed it might be alright in purchasing land for rehabilitation but the Government should not interfere in a private deal. After some discussion Mr Blackmore moved “That immediate communication be made to the Dominion office of the Farmers’ Union asking them to approach the Minister in charge of the Servicemen’s Settlement and Land Sale Bill to hold it up until he has consulted the Farmers’ Union.” On the motion of Mr W. H. Cheale it was decided to also telegraph the Minister asking him to hold up the bill until contacted by the Farmers’ Union.
