NATIONAL PARTY

MEETING HELD AT WHITIANGA ADDRESS BY MR W. A. CLARK There was a good attendance of friends and supporters at the meeting of the National Party held in the Whitianga Hall recently when Mr W. A. Clark outlined the platform of the party at the forthcoming election. Mr Clark dealt particularly with the question of rehabilitation, stressing the urgency of the need for a good policy for this highly important work. He deplored the need for an election during the period of national emergency but stated that it had been forced upon the country by the policy of the present Government. In referring to the present unsatisfactory state of the country, Mr Clark instanced the growing number of strikes and industrial disputes. Touching on the Guaranteed Price. Mi- Clark pointed out that the farmer the present was being paid on a basis of 2s 3d per hour for a 40-hour week. To retain this level when much higher standards prevailed in other’ industries showed that the Government was entirely out of sympathy with the farmer.

He also referred to the big increase in sales tax which was now 20%, pointing out that the Labour Government had promised to immediately remove this tax before they gained office.

The meeting closed with a vote of thanks to the speaker.
