TORTOISE RACES
R.A.F. IN TUNISIA AIR FORCE MASCOTS With R.A.F. wings painted on their backs, six Nile tortoises flew into action in Tunisia, and watched the Axis hare, Rommel, on the run. Off duty, they raced at nights, heavily backed by their fighter pilot-mas-ters at an R.A.F. squadron’s base. Another R.A.F. mascot,, Fourpence, has given birth to five pups, Farthing, Ha’penny, Penny, Tuppence and Traybit. All advanced towards Bizerta with Montgomery’s Bth Army. A Tripolitanian hen, Winnie, graduated to mascot class after a fattening course intended for celebration, when she hid behind a bucket on killing day. Bulkiest pet is a westward-wending 100-franc donkey bought in Alexandria.
