FORTY YEARS AGO

RIFLE COMPETITIONS WICKS AND GIMBLETT CUPS POSITION OF MINING INDUSTRY On Saturday next two cup competitions will eventuate on the Paeroa Rifle Range. The first match which starts at 10' a.m. is for the half-yearly competition for the Wick’s Cup, which is at present held 'by Lieutenant Hubbard. The second match starts at 1 p.m. and is the second competition for the Gimblett Cup, now held 1 by Private Roach. These two matches will form a very interesting day’s shooting, and some good scores are pretty certain to be made. understand on good authority that when the award in the Miners’ Union case at Waihi as against the Waihi and other gold mining companies expires that another citation will come before the Arbitration Court. It is sincerely to be hoped that in the interests of the mining industry, any matters* in dispute may be amicably and ' reasonably settled. The present time is a most critical one in regard to mining matters on the Peninsula and if European capital gets another scare and it is again shown that mining investors are at the mercy of pure caprice, then the field will continue to suffer slump times. The award expires in October next, and it is with some trepidation we look forward to future issues.
