DRAINAGE MATTERS
REQUEST TO REDUCE RATES CATTLE DAMAGE DRAINS At the monthly meeting of the Thames Valley Drainage Board held in Te Aroha recently, the Ngai’ua branch of the N.Z. Farmers’ Union wrote suggesting that as the 'board was experiencing difficulty in obtaining suitable labour to clean all drains, could it see its way clear to reduce the drainage rates. After giving consideration to the request it was decided that the board could not accede to such a proposal as most of the drains in that area had
also been cleaned. Any others that could not be attended to in any year would necessarily cost the board twice as much to clean the following season. Stock Damage Drains Straying stock at Tahuna, it was reported, had caused damage to drains at Tahuna, where it was alleged in one instance that several hundred head of cattle had been turned out to graze on one road. The Piako County Council is to be notified of this and asked to prevent a recurrence of this damage. Outlet At Ngarua A committee reported having inspected an outlet between Messrs Hallett and Sealey which also ran out along the Waitoa-Matamata Main Highway. It.was left to the settlers concerned to decide whether they wished the board to take over the outlet and to advise the board later of the decision arrived at. To Extend Outlet Mr A. L. Wratt waited, on the board with a request .that it extend No. 6 line outlet to his boundary. It was agreed to do this in order to give Mr Wratt 'better drainage.
