PRISONERS OF WAR

WAIHI AND PAEROA BOYS AN INTERESTING LETTER Of interest to Waihi and Paeroa people alike is a letter just received by Mrs Hayward, of Paeroa, from her son, Sergeant Claude Hayward, now a prisoner of war in Stalag VUIb, Germany. Referring to the conditions in the camp, Sergeant Hayward describes them as good except for so much barb-wire, which to him was rather irksome. He mentions having met his cousin Claude Cowan, (a nephew of Mr H. Cowan, -of Waihi), and also Trevor Clarkin, of Paeroa, and further states that a batch of New Zealand airmen came into the camp, among them being Sergeant Doug. Giddens, of Waihi, who had just received his first mail from home since being a prisoner and was thrilled to get it. He concludes his letter with great praise for the New Zealand Red Cross, saying that the parcels were coming forward regularly, and that all the boys said, “Good old Red Cross.” Sergeant Hayward was working with an English doctor- in Crete and stayed behind with the wounded rather than be evacuated, and by a strange coincidence he is now working with the same doctor in Stalag VUl'b.
