TYRES & HOME GUARD
HARDSHIP ON FARMERS LETTER TO FARMERS’ UNION The question of the supply of tyres to country members •of the Home Guard was referred to in a letter from the Minister of Supply, Hon. D. G. Sullivan, which was read at the monthly meeting of the Auckland Provincial Executive of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union on June 16. The letter stated that a list of those eligible for tyres had been compiled, but it was not possible to provide for private cars. As cars operated by members of the Home Guard were mainly privately owned and used only partially for these duties it was not possible to give their owners favourable consideration in the matter of tyres. While the work of the Home Guard was appreciated the request could not be granted unless the cars were used exclusively fpr such duties. Mr S. E. Hall (Matatoki) and Mr Heath Mason (Te Kuiti), spoke of the hardships that were being imposed on many farmers by the difficulty in obtaining tyres. The President (Captain H. M. Rushworth) said if particulars of individual cases were • supplied to the authorities some satisfaction migh£«be obtained. Statements of a general character’ were not likely to be of any avail.
