LADIES BEATEN
CRICKET AT WHENUAKITE AN INTERESTING GAME SERVICES EASILY DEFEATED Despite the unfavourable weather there w’as a large gathering of spectators at the cricket matches played at Mr W. A. Hamilton’s during the week-end. In the morning a local team met a Services eleven in a single innings match. The Whenuakite-Hahei team, batting first, put up 99 (<H. Hinds 53, G. Donovan 20, W. A. Hamilton 15). J. Vause'and K. Lynch shared the bowling honours. The local team managed to dismiss its opponents for 59, J. Vause (24) being the only batsman to get going. H. Hinds and W. Harsant were the best bowlers.
The weather improved somewhat in the afternoon when the enthusiastic ladies’ team was narrowly defeated by a combined men’s team. Miss Betty Hare won the toss and elected to bat first.
Loud applause greeted each run made by the ladies while derisive laughter attended the frantic efforts of bowlers who, handicapped by bowling left-handed kept the umpires busy signalling wides. By the time tne last wicket fell the captain, K. Lynch, had in desperation tested the bowling ability of each member of his team and the score had risen to 101. To this total Miss Betty Hare had contributed 23, Miss Margaret Simpson 12 and “Miss” Wides 51.
Batting left-handed the men replied with 117, F. Foote 51, R* Marshall 26, G. Cochrane 13 and A. Davies 11, contributing the majority of the runs.
Throughout, the prompt and unbiassed decisions of the umpires, Misses Wright, Hinds and Vause were a feature of the game.
There is. little doubt in the minds of those who were fortunate enough to witness this match that with a little more practice the ladies would be able to field a strong eleven and turn the tables on the men at some future date. ,
