SOLDIERS MEET

COROMANDEL R.S.A. ELECTION OF OFFICERS GOOD FINANCIAL POSITION A very good attendance of members marked the tenth annual meeting of the Coromandel branch of the Thames R.S.A. held on Saturday evening, May 15, 1943, when Dr. F. T. Birkinshaw was in the chair. The annual statement and report was read by the secretary, Mr J. H. Lucas. During the past year the association was alive to the needs of the returned servicemen and had taken a lively interest in the matter of rehabilitation. The financial statement showed that the branch was well established and the credit balance had increased during the year, practically all of the cash assets earning interest in the Post Office Savings Bank account. The election of officers., resulted in Mr P. J. Murphy being elected to the position of president and Mr F. H. Purdom re-elected vice-president. Thecommittee of six was elected as follows: Messrs H. V. Denize, E. Port, C. W. Hovell, N. S. Ward, F. Ngapo, A. E. Jones. Mr J. H. Lucas was reelected secretary.

Mr P. J. Murphy then took the chair and after a few more items of business asked all to partake of supper. During the evening the branch had the pleasure of Mr C. ; G. Macindoe’s company, when apportiijnity was taken to personally extend to him the thanks and appreciation of the members.

Mr Macindoe suitably replied, stressing the point that those who have paid the supreme sacrific and have their names engraved on the Roll of Honour have gone the best way possible and it is up to us to see that these monuments are kept in order. He was only too pleased to be able to do what he had done. Mr Macindoe thanked the branch for inviting him along and trusted that this would be the first of many such evenings.

Stories of the past and songs filled in the evening which concluded with the National Anthem.
