PATRIOTIC AFFAIRS

MEETING IN COROMANDEL COLLECTORS ARRANGED' A meeting of the Coromandel Patriotic sub-Committee was held in the ■County Chambers on Friday, May 21. The chairwoman, Mrs Lynne, presided over a full attendance. Miss June Notman was appointed the fifth lady member of the committee. Circular No. 31 was fully discussed and as a result it was resolved that a recommendation be forwarded to the Inter-zone Committee suggesting that the members of that committee get in touch with the subcommittees in the county with a view to stirring up enthusiasm and asking them to pull their weight in the raising of funds this year. It was pointed out that Kuaotunu had raised its full quota and Coromandel had . over-subscribed its full quota last year, other districts being far short of theirs. It was resolved that direct diving by way of collections be one of the main methods of raising funds by the committee this year. The collectors and their areas were arranged as follows:— Top of town down to hospital.— Mrs Lynne. Hospital-to O’Hara’s (left side) — Mrs J. McNeil.

Hospital to O’Hara’s (right side). —Mr R. McNeil.

O’Hara’s to bank (both sides). — Mr R. McNeil.

Bank south to Wynyardtou.—Miss V. Dayies. Tiki road from' Wynwardtou and including Mercury Bay road and Te Kouma road. —Mrs Tarrant-Hbsk-ings.

Bank, west, Wharf road and Hauraki road.—Mr N. Scott Ward. It was resolved that Miss Davies be appointed treasurer as well as secretary in order to receive collected funds before handing them over to the inter-zone secretary.

It was pointed out by various members that considerable difficulty had arisen in the past in getting the servicemen’s names and numbers, etc., and also in getting to know in time to put on a farewell when they came on final leave. Members of the public were asked to assist the commit--' tee in this respect by acquainting any member of the committee immediately it is known that a serviceman

(Army, Navy, Air Force or Merchant Navy) is coming or has arrived on his final leave, or has returned from overseas in order. to arrange a public welcome home.

A social committee was formed as follows: Misses Notman and Davies and Messrs Knight and Benham. It was decided to hold a dance in a fortnight’s time. The meeting then closed. (
