SPORTS ON THE BEACH
PAEROA BOY WINS EVENT PTE. ROBERTS PERFORMS WELL Jumping 35ft. Oiin. in a sports meeting held by the Second New iZealand Expeditionary Force* in the Pacific, Private L. Roberts, a former member of the Paeroa Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club, was the winner of the hop, step and jump event. The sports were held on the beach, •Private Roberts in a letter to the Gazette writing as under: — “The last time we were out there they held a sports meeting and of course I had to be in. I entered for the long jump and hop, step and jump. In the long jump I came fourth, jumping 16ft. Ciin., but in the hop, step and jump I was lucky, jumping 35ft. Bin. to win by two inches. There was a big crowd there and from 12 to 15 competitors in each event. “I should have told you before that we had divisional sports about .a month ago. I centered for all the field events and although I did well at practice I did no good on- the day.”
