Adapted from a long-1 run Broadway stage hit by Irwid Shaw, the new Warner Bros, picture stars Ida Lupino and John GarfieldJ whose teamwork as the fiery outcasts of “The Sea Wolf” won them praise from critics and public. Alsd featured are Thomas Mitchell, Eddia Albert, George Tobias and Aline Mac-| Mahon. I Miss Lupino portrays the daughter of a gentle old tailor (Thomas Mitl chell) who ekes out a bare living ill the tiny fog-bound community ol ■Sheepshead Bay. Passionately desirl ing : n re from life than a job as a switchboard operator and a boy friemj (Eddie Albeit) who * can offer he! nothing in the way of entertainment but a cheap fish dinner and a walll along, the boardwalk, she is delightea at the advent of a new man in het life. I This young man, played by Garl field, is’ a go-getter, and she sees il him her chance for a new life. Whal she does not know about him, howl ever, is that he is extorting monel from her father and his friend. Thl two old men have a little row-boat il which they go fishing in the bay anl Garfield has terrorised them into paw ing him five dollars a week for “prtfl tection” on their boat. Her fathel 'warns her against her new-found r<l mance and even offers »to use his veil meagre savings to send her away ol a cruise to Cuba. 1 She tells Garfield of her father! offer. The social parasite in him ■ immediately aroused. Promising ® take her to Cuba himself, he demaml from the two old men the money th® have saved. In desperation these tv® gentle old people decide to murd® him. They lure him into their bo® one night, their plans all careful® laid. At the last minute, howevc® they find themselves incapable of til deed. Garfield, suspecting their m® tive, suddenly draws his gun, hut fl doing so, stumbles and falls into tfl bay. In the ensuing brush with tfl law when the drowned body is foun® the two old men emerge triumphal® the girl learns that her steady pip® ding boy friend is her real love.
